READ | Luke 11:11-13

Let me ask you this: do you know of any father who would give his son a snake on a plate when he asked for a serving of fish? Of course not! Do you know of any father who would give his daughter a spider when she had asked for an egg? Of course not! If imperfect parents know how to lovingly take care of their children and give them what they need, how much more will the perfect heavenly Father give the Holy Spirit’s fullness when his children ask Him.

CONSIDER

Jesus is using extreme imagery to point to the generosity and trustworthy nature of Father God. Are there areas in your life that “imperfect” parenting has caused you to doubt the heart of God for you? The Holy Spirit comes to reveal the heart of the Father and His joy in us. He awakens us to our true place in God’s family.

ASK

Holy Spirit, fill me afresh. Heal any wounded places in my heart from bad experiences with imperfect parents. Awaken me to the love of my heavenly Father and bring me to the fullness of identity in His love.

PARENT NOTE

The Holy Spirit isn’t just a good thing – He’s the BEST thing we could ask our Father God for. This part of the Trinity is available to us all the time.

Think of all the grown-ups in your life that make themselves available to help you. Your parents are probably at the top of the list. Then, there are teachers, pastors, children’s church leaders, doctors, nurses, scout leaders, coaches–and even more. As you go through this day make a mental list (or an actual paper/pencil list!) of all the adults who help you and care for you. You might be surprised! Then take the time to thank God for each of them.
