Christmas Day Scripture: Isaiah 9:6-7 (Good News Translation)

6 A child is born to us! A son is given to us! And he will be our ruler. He will be called, “Wonderful Counselor,” “Mighty God,” “Eternal Father,” “Prince of Peace.” 7 His royal power will continue to grow; his kingdom will always be at peace. He will rule as King David’s successor, basing his power on right and justice, from now until the end of time. The Lord Almighty is determined to do all this.

Invitation: Get your notebook or journal and your favorite pen, pencil, or markers. Read Isaiah 9:6-7 aloud slowly. Pause for a few seconds. Then read the same passage aloud again. (Feel free to have two different people read the passage.)

Choose one of the descriptive words about Jesus in verse 6. Think about how you have experienced Jesus as WONDERFUL, MIGHTY, ETERNAL (never-ending), or as a source of PEACE. In your journal, draw a picture or write a couple of sentences about this experience with Jesus.

Reflection:  Adjectives are words we use to describe people or things. What are some of the words in verse 6 that are used to describe Jesus?

Contemplation:  Think about some of the favorite gifts you have received at Christmas or your birthday.  What are some of the words you would use to describe those gifts?

Discussion:  If you would like to, share your drawing with your family or tell them about your experience. Parents or grandparents, describe to your children or grandchildren some of the emotions you experienced the day your child was born. Children, describe how you felt when a younger sister, brother, or cousin was born into your family.

Prayer Exchange: Father, Son, and Holy Spirit, thank you for the gift of your love given to us on the very first Christmas Day. Jesus, we thank you and we worship you because you are wonderful and mighty.  We thank you that your love for us is never-ending and for all the ways your presence gives us peace. We thank you that you are the greatest gift of all!  Every day, please help us to give our lives to you.

Happy birthday, Jesus! We love you and we celebrate your birthday! Amen.
