… and be found in [Christ], not having a righteousness of my own that comes from the law, but that which is through faith in Christ—the righteousness that comes from God on the basis of faith. I want to know Christ—yes, to know the power of his resurrection and participation in his sufferings, becoming like him in his death,

REFLECT

In this passage, Paul says he wants to become “like [Jesus] in his death.” Think about all that Jesus endured on his way to his death, along with the pain and agony he experienced as he hung on the cross in our place. Jesus honestly expressed his reluctance and dread to the Father. But ultimately, he surrendered to the Father’s will and paid the price for our salvation with his own life.

ASK

What is the Holy Spirit asking you to surrender? What desire or plan is God calling you to lay aside and sacrifice? Why are you reluctant to let go? Ask the Holy Spirit to strengthen you and empower you to become like Jesus in his death – wholly surrendered to God and the priorities of His kingdom – so that you might also experience resurrection life here and now!
